On 06 March, 2019, Townsville Airport announced that its redevelopment would progress after a loan was secured from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).
Townsville Airport is committed to delivering an $80 million upgrade, “Project Alive”, that will see substantial refurbishment to the terminal, expansion to provide for more aircraft parking, better road access and an upgrade to all core infrastructure. The three-year renovation project will support more than 200 construction jobs and 50 full-time operational jobs after it is complete.
This upgrade will address capacity issues and cater for the region's growth. The airport needs to grow to unlock the future prosperity of the region. Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan announced that up to $50 million of the required funds would be made available through the NAIF. Townsville Airport is a major economic enabler for North Queensland, supporting more than 3,000 jobs and contributing $420 million to the economy.
Queensland Airports Limited’s Project Alive will deliver an airport that the community can be proud of and one that reflects Townsville's unique destination and character. As a gateway to North Queensland, Townsville Airport has an important role to play in providing a positive first and last impression for travellers and efficient handling of air cargo. Project Alive will make the airport more modern, welcoming and efficient - benefiting airline partners, airport businesses and the wider community.
